All surfers share a common sensation that simply can’t be explained in words. After your very first wave, you’ll share it too. Our mission is to help you experience that sensation and to reach the next level of performance. Our goal is to enhance your total surfing experience through smart instruction in a personal environment.

Our surfing lessons in Waikiki are customized to fit any experience level and learning style. They are crafted individually for the beginning surfer who wants to test the waters for the very first time, for the intermediate surfer looking to improve on fundamentals or take on more challenging waves and maneuvers, and for the advanced professional level surfer who is on the search for a competitive edge or simply to push themselves to their own personal limits.

Our lessons for beginners will teach you the basic elements of the sport to get you up and riding —surfing etiquette, water safety, body positioning, board handling and positioning, paddling, and getting up on your feet.

For our advanced students, the instruction takes on a refined direction that matches your riding style — correcting ‘bad habits’, identifying strengths and weaknesses in technique, competitive strategies, and surfing bigger waves.

Most importantly, all students will receive instruction that acknowledges the mental, emotional, and spiritual elements that make surfing such a unique and beautiful sport. You’ll learn how to connect with the ocean environment, understand the line up and the actions of surfers around you, and surf to express your personality.

Our lessons are customized to your skill level. All prices include surfboards and all the equipment you need to get up and ride. All you have to bring is is your swimwear, towel, sunscreen and change of clothes.

Before you go

If you would like to take advantage of our prepaid footage discount, please reply to this email or purchase here.

How To Prepare

Please arrive prepared for your lesson wearing swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, and bringing a towel. Please note that reef-safe sunscreen is required in Hawaii.

Read, sign and submit our online waiver and registration form.

Each participant 18 and older must sign their own form and the parent/guardian of all children under 18 must sign for them.

We also have our waiver and registration form available in:

Japanese

Korean

Chinese (Mandarin)

If you are prone to seasickness, please consider taking a remedy you are accustomed to using before the lesson (speak with your doctor for recommendations).

What We Will Provide

Long sleeve surf shirts and protective reef shoes for use during your lesson.

If you have your own surf shirt and reef shoes, you are welcome to use them.

Water equipment: surfboard, body board/fins, or stand up paddle board/paddle

If you have experience and are looking for a specific size range in your equipment, please advise us ahead of time by calling or email.

While in the water

We have a safe place to store your items. We recommend removing jewelry, hats and glasses before heading to the surf. Also, we do not recommend bringing anything in the water that you would be sad to lose. We do not advise wearing seeing eyeglasses (you can certainly surf blind).

Additional Information

If you or any participants cannot swim, please advise the staff ahead of time.

If you or any participants have any medical conditions or injuries that we should be aware of, please advise the staff ahead of time.

Photos & videos will be available for purchase either before or after the lesson. There is a discount available if you purchase your footage before your lesson. Please email or call us to prepay for footage.

If you tend to get cold easily, we offer wetsuit rentals. For children, we have short sleeve spring suits. For adults, we have wetsuit jackets available. The rental fee for the duration of the lesson is $10 plus tax per wetsuit. Please email or call us to check availability and prepay for the rental.

Tips are always greatly appreciated and graciously accepted. They are never taken for granted or completely expected.

After Your Lesson

We will shuttle you back to the Ohana Surf Center to view the footage from your lesson!

Please visit the FAQ section of our website for answers to common questions: https://www.ohanasurfproject.com/FAQ/

We look forward to sharing with you our love for the ocean and for the many wave riding sports we enjoy!
