About

Experience and capture the authentic Alaskan Northern Lights with us no matter your photography skill level!

For this aurora tour, we'll travel to a remote/private location and help you come back with your very own incredible photos. Avoid the crowded uncomfortable vans, big group tours, overcrowded pullouts, overcrowded lodges, and when possible the cloudy skies. We chase the lights only when necessary, otherwise enjoy the comfort of the lodge and its amenities and most of all the northern lights!

You'll be guided by a local Alaskan native who knows the area and where to go and has grown up experiencing this natural phenomenon.

Your local guide will teach you how to set up your personal camera equipment so that you go home with excellent northern lights photos of your own. You can choose to rent one of our cameras at the time of booking if you don't have your own.

Professional aurora portrait included.

(Photo package available)

You'll be picked up in our 15-passenger van where you'll enjoy the comfort and warmth while keeping an eye out for the aurora on the way.

You've invested a lot to make this dream come true. Now, book with a born and raised Alaskan familiar with the area and the aurora.

More Info

We've made sure the lodge is located in an area with dark skies and zero light pollution. This makes seeing even the faintest aurora possible with the naked eye.

Located less than 100 miles from Fairbanks, under the aurora oval a section of the earth's atmosphere where you can see the northern lights.

Need help with your camera settings? No problem. Your Alaskan guide and a professional photographer will help you with your settings. We want to make sure you get the best photos to capture your experience. Additional photos may be purchased.

Face The Outdoors offers uncrowded, unhurried, small group tours to view the aurora borealis in comfort and style at the Aurora Viewing Lodge, and we're the only viewing lodge that chases when the clouds become a factor.

Please dress appropriately for times outside viewing and taking pictures.

Before you go

Before Your Tour

About 24 hours before your tour, you’ll get an automated reminder with your booking details. On the day of your tour, Michael will confirm your exact pickup time. Pickups run between 8 and 8:30 PM.

If the weather looks questionable or conditions change, Michael will email you a day or more ahead. He might let you know we’ll be chasing clearer skies, or check whether you can switch to a better night. If you don’t hear from him about weather, we’re on as planned.

What to Bring

Warm layers (hat, gloves, insulated jacket, winter pants, warm boots)

Camera and tripod if you have one

Headlamp (red light mode preferred — preserves night vision)

Extra hand/toe warmers

Water bottle and a snack for chase nights

Visiting November–March? Alaska cold is no joke. We recommend searching “Fairbanks winter gear rental” to outfit your group properly. The warmer you are, the longer you’ll want to stay out under the aurora.

No camera? No problem — Michael provides photography guidance for any phone, and professional aurora portraits are included with every tour.

What’s Included

Round-trip hotel pickup in our heated van

Private aurora viewing lodge access — our actual home, not a commercial facility

Hot drinks and light snacks at the lodge

Professional aurora portraits (full resolution, no upsells)

Photography assistance for your camera or phone

Mobile aurora chasing if clouds roll in — the only Fairbanks lodge tour that also chases

Heated indoor viewing with outdoor deck access

Clean bathroom facilities at the lodge

About Aurora Chasing

We chase when the skies call for it. On clear nights, you’ll enjoy the aurora from the comfort of our private lodge. On overcast nights, we relocate to find clear skies — the best of both worlds. Chase spots are remote, so restroom options on the road are limited to the outdoors and hot drinks and snacks may not come along. Bring your own water on those nights.

Please Note

Children under 10: Please book our Private Tour option. Our standard tours run about 8 hours into the early morning, which isn’t ideal for young children.
