Equipment List

**Required gear:**

- Layered clothing

Rain gear - both jacket & pants. Warm sweater and/or jacket. Hiking pants, NO SHORTS

- Light gloves

Gloves are used to protect your hands from the jagged ice on the glacier's surface, even on a warm day they are required!

- Sunglasses and sunscreen

The reflective nature of the glacier makes these an absolute necessity! Please come prepared.

- Hiking boots** with ankle support or other sturdy walking shoes

- Water bottle

- Lunch or snacks

We do not provide lunch or snacks for this trip, unless you have purchased Snack Packs as part of your trip.

If you are in need of a lunch, you can pick up a sandwich at the store in McCarthy or order a sack lunch from the Kennicott Glacier Lodge the day before your hike.

- Backpack

Please make sure it is big enough to carry your extra layers, lunch, water, and to strap on the pair of crampons and climbing boots we will lend you.

**Recommended Gear:**

- Trekking Poles

These can be helpful on the trail, but are not recommended for the Glacier. If you choose to bring poles, please make sure they are collapsible and can be easily stored away.

- Bug Spray

Luckily, bugs aren't an issue on the glacier, but they are in town and on the trail out to the glacier.

- Camera/phone** to take pictures.

Activity Disclaimer

I have acknowledged that:

  • We will hike up to 7 miles.
  • 5.5 miles are on a moderate out-and-back trail to the glacier, with an elevation gain/loss of 400ft.
  • The last 1/4 mile to the glacier is over a steep switchback that descends 300ft (We'll hike this up on the way back!)
  • There is a 100ft section of steep, loose, muddy rock over ice right at the glacier's edge.
  • No previous climbing experience is necessary, but I must be physically capable of climbing up to 60 vertical feet at one time.
  • We will be in a mixed group with varying ability levels and ages *(Disregard if you have booked a private tour)*.
  • We will go out rain or shine!

Tipping your Guide

Tipping makes up a large portion of a guide's income, allows them to pursue guiding as a sustainable career, and is extremely appreciated!

If you didn't leave a prepaid gratuity for your guide, that's ok - you can tip your guide by cash or credit card on the day of your trip with us.

A normal tip range is 10-20% of your trip total, but if you feel your guide went above and beyond, then the sky's the limit!

Additional Information

Our trips go out rain or shine! In the rare event that we have to cancel a trip due to dangerous conditions, you will be notified and receive a full refund.

You may want to print this confirmation for your reference, as cell phone reception can be spotty in the McCarthy area, and only Verizon cell service reliably works.

If you have any questions, please visit our FAQ page.
